Not so hidden gems: Brunch Spots for Mother’s Day

Before I started to write this post, I thought to myself…why do people always have brunch on Mother’s Day? Dumb question. Because breakfast foods and afternoon cocktails are the best gift that anyone can receive. What better way to treat your mother to a relaxing day then to offer her brunch in Northwest Connecticut where you not only get a delicious meal, but also beautiful scenery, local shopping and a plethora of activities for the outdoor enthusiast.

Okay so these places aren’t that hidden, most of them are well known to locals of Northwest CT, but Mother’s Day is approaching fast and it’s time to start making reservations….why not choose one of the great places on the list?

  1. Mountainside Cafe – Falls Village
I know that I’ve talked about this place before, but it’s so good that I can’t stop. (Plus, my last post was about lunch, this one is about brunch.) If I can force myself to fight off the urge to get the same salad that I order every time, I end up going for eggs. Whoever is in the kitchen at Mountainside is the king (or queen) of perfectly cooked eggs. The omelets are huge and look like they belong on the cover of Bon Appetite. Fluffy and filled to the brim, the omelets are stuffed with items like bacon, Brie cheese, apples and arugula. If you want something a little bit heavier, try a skillet, it’s almost like a decomposed omelet. The “Super Mario Skillet” is a combination of scrambled eggs, pancetta, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, arugula and cremini mushrooms served on a bed of home fries in a…you guessed it…a hot skillet! Yum! Looking for an extra way to spoil your mom or grandmom? Take some house made pastry items to go from the glass case at the register.
  2. Stacked Kitchen – Sharon
No, they don’t have a brunch menu every week. Yes, they have a killer breakfast menu served all day every day! This family friendly restaurant is perfect for all ages and offers a Children’s Menu with items that even I find tempting like the “Grilled Nutella & Raspberry Sandwich”. *Drooling*. The regular breakfast menu includes a variety of benedicts, because everything’s better with poached eggs, plus omelets and sandwiches such as the “Harvest” which includes two eggs, avocado, red onion, bacon, and cheddar on multigrain toast. The Stacked Kitchen has been open for just over 4 years now and it gets better everyday.
  3. Kingsley Tavern – Kent
I’ll have to admit, it’s been awhile since I’ve dined at the Kingsley Tavern for brunch, but that doesn’t mean that I’ve forgotten just how good it was. They offer brunch on Saturday and Sunday and their menu ranges from “Absinthe-Steamed PEI Mussels” to “Huevos Rancheros”, and a traditional “Cobb Salad” that includes organic chicken, with all of the usual fixins. On my last visit, I opted for the burger which might sound boring but was far from it. The locally sourced, grass-fed black angus beef was perfectly cooked and at an impressively fair price. They also offer specialty cocktails which would be perfect for the hard working moms out there!
  4. Country Bistro – Salisbury
For some reason, for the longest time, I thought that the Country Bistro was just a simple coffee shop. I was blown away when I finally got a look at their breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu and when I got to taste their brunch! Quiche makes me happy, and not many people make it. The Country Bistro offers a specialty quiche every brunch served with a garden salad, toasted baguette, real jam and butter. Classic dishes like a smoked salmon platter, eggs and hash and french toast are perfectly prepared. The “Popover Breakfast Platter” includes fresh popovers, preserves, butter, two eggs scrambled with sour cream and fresh herbs, served with Black Forest ham or bacon. Treat Mom to a specialty cocktail such as an Elderberry Mimosa or a Good Morning Martini!
  5. Infinity Music Hall & Bistro – Norfolk
While Infinity Hall doesn’t typically serve breakfast or lunch, they always make sure to celebrate the holidays with lots of specials! They will be open on Mother’s Day from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM so there’s no excuse to miss it. Brunch includes “Steak and Eggs” and a “Hot Buttered Lobster Sandwich”, and dinner includes “Citrus Panko Encrusted Haddock” and “Soy Marinated Flank Steak”. Make your reservations now because I’m sure the bistro will fill up fast. If you’re planning on doing dinner, you can make the day extra special for mom by purchasing tickets to the live concert at 7:00 PM which includes the loving songs of Frank Sinatra with a six piece instrumental and vocal ensemble. Dinner and a show? I can’t imagine a mother, grandmother, aunt, or mom-to-be out there who wouldn’t appreciate such an amazing date.
